U.S.-Capitol.jpg House OKs bill to let Salt Lake cemetery sell land

"The U.S. House has approved a bill resolving an issue that kept Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Salt Lake City from selling about 60 acres of its property to a school.

The cemetery wanted to sell the property to raise money and Salt Lake City agreed to zone the land so soccer fields could be built on it.

Congress founded the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in 1847 and later exchanged federal land with the cemetery subject to a clause saying that if the land were ever used for anything but a cemetery, its ownership would revert to the federal government."

Why does the government own land that is not being used for courts and police in the first place?

Highway patrol plans DUI crackdown on Friday

What about "speeders", "stop light runners", "tired people", "radio station changers", "old people that wander on the road", and anyone else that is a human and driving? The argument against drunk drivers is that "they should know better". As if drunk driver's are the only ones that get in accidents.

The evidence that "drunk" driving is somehow inherently much more dangerous is very questionable. Most statistics will state some kind of garbage statistic about how "60% of accidents involve drunk drivers". These statistics do not take into account who was the victim, the drunk driver or the other driver. It also fails to account for how many "drunk" drivers are on the road. If 60% of drivers are "drunk", one would expect ~60% of the accidents to involve drunk drivers, just like if 70% of the drivers are Caucasian, one would expect ~70% of accidents to involve a Caucasian. So should we then make driving while white illegal?

Utah to see increase in minimum wage

This headline could also read, "Utah about to lose more jobs". The supply of money does not increase just because government mandates higher wages. In other words, if an employer can afford to pay two people $6.50 an hour, but the government now mandates the employer pay them both $7.50 an hour, this means the employer now has to fire one of the employees. So instead of two people making a total of $13.00 an hour, now they are only making $7.50 an hour between the two of them. Can government officials get any more stupid? You can count on them to hit you when you are down.

Cedar Hills man charged with tax evasion

"No taxation without representation". Huh? What's that ask the politicians.

Council OKs putting public safety building bond on ballot

Let's hope this legislation fails.

New checks on school employees in place, but slow to take effect

As if background checks will insure we get better teachers. I have an idea, how about privatizing schools and letting the market determine which schools have the best teachers? Oh wait, heaven forbid I get to choose what is best for my child. Those bureaucrats are so much smarter than me.
